The first GFs (to GF-5, maybe?) were almost identical to the SCR-*-183s.
Why the Navy changed is a mystery. Why the AAC did not follow is more of
 a mystery.

--I can't really shed any light on the developement of the RUGF, but want
to comment that while the Army set remained a 'command' type short
range voice radio thruout all its deployments, the Navy's set was used
in 3 roles: short range voice radio (single place & 2 place planes), short
range voice and cw radio under control of radio operator in 2 place planes,
and liaison long range cw radio in large patrol planes (PBY) and scout-
bombers and torpedo planes (SBD, TBF). In the latter role it was matched
with the 'Jeep' transmitter ( GP-*) and in the patrol plane, the GO. So it
was a lot more versatile than the Army's set.
Looking at some simple schematic, like the BC-230 / 430, is really
relaxing, isn't it?
