I believe that MG is a fairly large unit, which means that motor and
generator re builders can repair it essentially from the ground up. Of
course, the cost may be beyond your budget, but all the components are
replaceable, from the brushes and bearings to rewinding the fields and
armatures. Unless you manage to destroy the frame or bend the armature,
I don't see a problem.
On the other hand, you might consider running a solid state power supply
for general on the air operation, while saving the M-G for show. And,
keep an eye on cooling, lubrication and cleaning, as you use it. Antique
automobile generators and starters from a much earlier time proliferate,
so I suspect your M-G can also.
As an aside, many of the original Navy FRD-10 DF sites used a big M-G set
as the uninterruptable power supply. There was always some maintenance
as there is with all mechanical stuff, but when they replaced them with
huge electronic UPS with their extensive battery rooms, they increased
the maintenance ten fold, besides creating an almost unsolvable EMI
problem that the M-G sets never had. All because someone thought
mechanical stuff is unreliable.
Just my $.00 worth.

George
