Morning Scott and all,

You are hearing a Russian Navy CW channel marker (aka Single Letter HF
Marker SLHFM) transmission from Sevastopol, Ukraine. These are part of what
is known as clustered channel markers from a varriety of sites.

Here is a breakdown of the recent activity on the 8 MHz cluster:

8.4947 D RUS Navy Sevastopol UKR
8.4948 P RUS Navy Kaliningrad RUS
8.4949 S RUS Navy Severomorsk RUS
8.4950 C RUS Navy Moscow RUS
8.4951 A RUS Navy Astrakhan AZE
8.4952 F RUS Navy Vladivostok RUS
8.4953 K RUS Navy Petropavlovsk-Kamchatskiy RUS
8.4954 M RUS Navy Magadan RUS

Several years ago when I was still writing the MT Ute World column, I broke
the story of not only who these folks were but also what they do. There is
more to their transmissions than just a CW letter beacon. The Enigma numbers
group has assigned a designator of "MX"

A good site to learn more is http://slhfm.totallyexplained.com/, but a
Google search with "engima mx SLHFM" will keep you busy.

73 and good hunting,
