A very splendid idea that the hamfest and airshow folks have
also informally used for many years.
There is one aspect of it that does concern me - since we have
already heard of "Eagle Eyes" or whatever they are calling it
this week and then considering that there may be similar
programs that we have NOT heard of, I wonder how quickly it will
take the base/facility security people to find this out.
Making a broad assumption that this venue may be monitored as
well as others perhaps we should consider - if folks who are
concerned with security are often not terribly friendly to those
along fence lines and in nearby parking areas, how wacko will
it drive them knowing that there are bunches of us holed up
in a nearby hotel?
Behind closed doors, talking about strategy to each other out of
reach and earshot and visual acquisition of the security types -
I can envision some cold-war style paranoia building up. Does that
make *me* more paranoid or THEM? WE are there for a hobby - THEY
are there to do a JOB. Given the Patriot Act, the "War on Terrorism"
and so forth put yourself in their shoes for a moment and then
consider how they will look at this.
I am NOT saying that we shouldn't do it. Only that we think about
it in the context of the times, and realize that if hobbyists are
being looked at as potential security threats then any action WE take
to have a more organized effort could be viewed with considerable
concern by THEM.

Perhaps this is an idea that we might consider posting information on this
list similiar to what railfan hobbiyistsdo!!!
Railfans get a webside listing (http://www.tracksidemotels.com in the
following categories TRACKSIDE MOTELS (We Could use Approach Zone's/Runway
views etc.) shows Motels, Hotels, Bed & Breakfast's, and Campgrounds located
directly on rail lines with a view of the tracks from the rooms.
Railroads listed can be seen from the room. To verify the view, ask to see
the room if in doubt.
RAILFAN LODGING (We could useLodging close to military bases/joint use
bases?) will include locations with
accommodations that a true railfan would enjoy but do not allow views from
the room. Features could include ease of access to a great ('on scene'
location, railfan (on scene
viewing/monitoring?)
hot spots, railroad decor & themeing, etc. Railroads (military/joint use air
fields?)
listed are within close proximity to the location.
