I think that this is a question that depends upon the individual.
Some folks have a hard time monitoring more than one radio,
others don't. The number of radios that one could monitor at one
time thus varies by the individual monitor. We should remember
that this a hobby, not a job. Speaking for myself, I sometimes
find myself trying to listen to so much that it becomes a chore
and I lose the enjoyment of the hobby. Sometimes I have to
remind myself to limit what I'm paying attention to and not lose
the fun of the hobby.

There are 3 radios in my car and I usually have a portable with me
as well. For the most part, each radio serves a different purpose.
I determine which radio the audio comes from by what direction the
audio comes from. The speakers are mounted in different locations
(left, right, and behind). This easily allows me to determine which
radio is active without looking at the radios.
