Interesting catch Al....   For many years my assumption was that the 
callsign ROD was the callsign that was orginally used by the 99th Bomb 
Wing's  KC97/KC135 Refueling Squadron that use to have ROD in their 
emblems....

I never really bothered to asked anyone from the 439AW at open 
house/airshows about the correct spelling of the callsign.
Perhaps during this seasons airshows/base open houses every hobbyists can 
take time to ask the various aircrew manned static exhibits (may be more of 
a rarity this season) what their static/cross country callsigns are.
