Hello Duane & the group:
Well, awhile back one person privately told me that at least at one regular
projects testing airfield, ALL aircraft transmissions were encrypted. Now,
if that's the case than there's going to be a signal present, albeit you
won't understand what is said but a signal will be present and this would be
subject to direction finding techniques. Of course if it's a spread
spectrum/encrypted transmission, than there might not be a signal present
that the milcom hobbyists would be able to receive.
Additionally, I was always under the impression that any aircraft about to
enter or flying in US airspace has got to report in to an FAA ATC facility
(however, a special unpublished UHF frequency might be used & this might be
very difficult to find). Perhaps that is the window to scooping an unknown
callsign (but again a callsign could be just about anything). Also I would
guess that if the classified aircraft had to make a landing at other than
specific landing site set up, than there would be some in the clear local
ATC communications, e.g. approach/control, tower, ground control.
Additionally the local base support nets would come alive with non typical
activity. I think that it's very doubtful that HF radio would be used by
any of these aircraft, most likely SATCOM & UHF.
I'd guess that one just has to keep a good ear to the scanner & try to
determine if any black project aircraft are flying in one's monitoring area.
