Entirely possible - never got my pilot's license
because it was too danged expensive and so my
ground school certificate expired and I forgot 
and/or confused a lot of stuff.

I spoke to an airline pilot about this (sometime ago) and he told me they
are NOT required to monitor guard like the military.
