[MilCom] Selfridge ANGB Open House Restrictions

There were about 30 years between WW2 and the Vietnam
War. Does the Vietnam War having happened mean that
the WW2 vets efforts were a waste? Of course not.
(temporarily ignoring that "police action" in Korea)

It has been about 30 years since the Vietnam War. What
is happening NOW does NOT mean that what you and all
the other guys who fought in Vietnam did was a waste.
Absolutely not.

But time passes, and we are up against an entirely new
set of world political and military issues. Taking that
into consideration, the previous wars are irrelevant
when you are looking at current security issues. We are
now dealing with animals who have proved that they can
and will hit us here at home, right here in the "48"
(and the other two as well).

You may do well to consider how many bases aren't even
having any kind of show or open house - when I look at the
schedule that Ken (I think) gave us the URL for, I see the
same thing that I have several years running: the word
CANCELLED attached to events at military bases.

"So many restrictions"? Even with *some* restrictions we
still have what is probably the most open society on the
planet. I don't think any of us like being restricted in
certain ways but I think we need to give a break to the
people who are trying to protect us (and themselves, let's
be honest about that). All it would take would be
ONE incident at ONE airshow and the FAA et al would
probably shut them ALL down for an indeterminate amount of
time.

I think as long as we are engaged in a war against these
terrorist animals let's give our military, cops and others
a little break and accept some security measures if it
keeps us and them safe and still allows the events to
even take place.

BTW, that's the same break that you guys that fought in
Vietnam *deserved* ever since you served. At the July 4th
Parade in my hometown, the Vietnam vets get some of the
loudest applause of any of the groups there. Most of the
folks recognize that y'all got screwed and lots of us have
known it all along. You deserved better.

Welcome home, and thanks.

(and I know a little bit about unappreciated veterans - my
Dad fought in that aforementioned "police action" in Korea
and was wounded in action. He got even less than the Vietnam
vets got, because Korea was the so-called "forgotten war".
Recently, this too has changed. I grew up with kids whose
fathers were old enough to have fought in WW2 and believe it
or not, they used to put down MY dad's service because "Korea
wasn't as big a deal". To quote a well known TV character
who was in Korea, "Horse hockey!")

If there are things in vehicles that are of such concern, they should be
detected when the vehicles are entering the base.

I note that the airshow is to be a salute to Vietnam Vets, but I am
beginning to wonder if my tours in Vietnam were a waste so that we now
subject ourselves to so many restrictions.
