The helicopter, a MH-53e Sea Dragon, part of the HM-14
"Vanguards" out of Naval Air Station Norfolk, crashed
around 3:30pm about 30 miles east of Naval Air Station
Oceana. 

WAVY News 10 is told the helicopter was on a logistics
mission headed towards the USS Bataan. 

The Coast Guard says a C-130 heard the crew's mayday
and responded, as did the USS Bataan.

The three crew members and five passengers were found
in a life raft and hoisted to safety by rescue
helicopters from the Bataan . There is no word on
their condition, although WAVY News 10 is told there
are no significant injuries. The eight were
transported to the Portsmouth Naval Hospital for
evaluation.

There is no word on what may have caused the crash.
