Thanks Steve for the posting of the pictures!!!!

Apparently this specific military flying unit is using those designators... 
HOWEVER,
generally each flying unit has their own standard frequency set up (on freq 
list card) in the cockpit
so for example if a 104FW A10 says go to FM#3 than they would all go to 
41.45 mhz.
The same applies to McGuire's KC10's going to interplane #1 which would be 
139.875....
I can only speak for my monitoring area (100 mile radius Springfield MA) & 
basically I
have NEVER heard (20+ years of monitoring) the terms "cheap suit", "magnum", 
"pistol", "haircut",
etc. used as a reference in my geographic monitoring area.

There are some "common" frequencies that do have more of a potential of 
being heard nationwide
e.g. 303.0..  Perhaps in your geographic monitoring area these 'named' freqs 
are in regular use...

I'm sure the challenge in a nationwide magazine column is to present 
information that will be
interesting & useful to a nationwide reader base.
