Aaron:

I not an expert BUT I doubt if another antenna attached directly to the
scanner (rather than
being outside) we not make that much of a difference -- again it depends
upon the
structure (e.g. building materials) you are in.

You might want to try one of those telescoping type antennas (e.g.
http://www.grove-ent.com/ANT6.html $15.00).
That's what I use with my BC296D while at home & it does a very good job of
finding the air/air (138-144, 148-150.8) bands while in the search mode up
to 100 miles away. It also seemed to improve the ground radio signals (both
base
support nets and aero related).

Also I noted on the Grove's pages these so called "Flex-Tenna (VU or HVU)
$9.95/$14.95 see:
http://www.grove-ent.com/grovevu.html OR
http://www.grove-ent.com/grovehvu.html
It would be interesting to see what the results are with this type of an
antenna on the military aero bands -- You might be able to make one of these
yourself with some coxial & just stripping off the insulator..... Perhaps
others can
add comments on antennas used for portable monitoring when a fixed outside
antenna can't be use.

Ken
