Kingsley Field is gearing up for the Sentry Eagle open house this
Saturday. While Sentry Eagle is a training exercise first and
foremost, the open house provides valuable public relations.
Sentry Eagle exercises are held once every two years. According to
Col. Tom Scheiss, commander of the 173rd Fighter Wing, "It started
back in the mid 80's back when Kingsley Field basically started with
the Air National Guard, and they decided to get a group of folks
together from around the country, fighters from around the country,
and do a big training exercise - do a large force air to air meet -
kind of a practice war."
Those early training exercises attracted a lot of public attention.
"There was a lot of public interest. They'd sit out at the end of the
runways, and watch the arrival shows, and the departures, and landings
every day. And so, we decided, hey - why don't we just open it up to
the public, and let them in on one of the days during the exercise.
We'll call it an open house, and that's been going on since the early
90's."
While Sentry Eagle training exercises won't formally get underway
until Wednesday, members of seven other units from as far away as
Texas and Missouri are already arriving in Klamath Falls. This year's
open house is expected to attract over 10 thousand spectators. "We
want the folks from Medford, Grants Pass, Roseburg, the Northern
California areas - they all support us, and we're a part of that
community. So we certainly welcome them out here."
The Sentry Eagle open house will take place this Saturday from 9 to
4:30. The event is offered free of charge. More than 40 aircraft and
350 pilots and crew members will be taking part in this year's Sentry
Eagle training exercises.
