All,
This may be a BGO (Blinding Glimpse of the Obvious) to most of you but
thought I'd share this just in case there are some "technically challenged" folks
like me out there.
I was fooling around with my antennas the other day and decided on a whim to
hook up my Diamond DJ-130 VHF/UHF discone through a splitter from my scanners
to my Icom R-75. I thought I'd try it on the LVHF freqs since the R-75 goes
up to 60 MHz.
Of course the antenna works well in the 30-60 MHz range but much to my
surprise it works really well down to as low as 3 MHz. I was able to copy all of the
HF ALE nets that I normally hear with my 45-ft PAR EF-SWL antenna (which is a
great antenna by the way).
I mention this just in case there are some of you out there (especially those
in suburban areas) who might be interested in trying some HF listening but
think they need lots of room for an HF antenna. Try your VHF/UHF antenna (whip
or discone). You might be surprised what you hear.
I guess this is an affirmation of what one of my old sergeants used to say, "
You never know what you will hear 'til you stick that wire up in the air."
