There is more than one issue here. For instance, was it inappropriate for
military pilots to be exchanging such comms, especially in the clear?
Certainly they were aware that they could easily be monitored by anyone with
a scanner. Was it legal and/or inappropriate to record them then make the
comms available on the Internet? Let's face it, the monitoring laws have
become so muddled and confusing that one might argue virtually any position
with some justification. You could cite pro/con chapter and verse from here
until Thursday. All of this seems to be more of a gray area, open to as much
to interpretion and opinion, than something clearly etched in granite.
As operator of the website, George retains the right to decide what
information will/won't appear. On the other hand, all who avail themselves of
his website retain the right to either like or dislike what they see there.
That's the standard arrangement between those who provide
Internet/book/magazine/newspaper/TV information and those who access it. The
survival of such media depends on the continuing interest and support of
those who seek information.
Information users are wont to freely express their likes and dislikes about
their media. This feedback is healthy because it's the way information
providers know what their audiences want or do not want. Some have said we
should drop this thjread, but his message board is the perfect forum for
milair monitors to exchange these opinions. George then has the sole option
of whether or not to make any changes.
Although I didn't agree with George's decision to provide the audio of these
particular comms, I support his website as well as his right to select what
he wants to present there. His website is a valuable resource for those of us
who enjoy monitoring military aero comms. It's not constructive to jump all
over George for one isolated item from an extensive website that has offered
so much valuable information for so long-- and at no charge to any of us.
