Just my few cents...
If I am calling CQ on a special frequency, can anyone tell me what is =
the difference between a spot done by a DX station and done by myself?
Isn't it just the originator's callsign?
So, at least, "self-spotting" is not that bad as we always treat it... =
Otherwise, I can ask a local friend to put me into the cluster, or just =
use my brother/sisters/XYL/grandpa or whose ever callsign for spotting =
me? You wouldn't recognize and furtheron you would not complain...
Fine for the first part, and according to the data exchange: In the =
earliest times we arranged skeds by letters, later by packet radio mail =
followed by email and now using online systems. Each time we knew both =
callsigns. No difference to now. Making a valid contact means =
exchanging of callsigns and some unknown data, which is the report and =
probably the locator in most times. So as long as this information is =
really exchanged on the band, nothing against confirming it on the =
bands...
Its just the duty to the honor of the single operator to keep these =
rules in his minds. This is not related to the cluster.
Of course I am a little sad about using the cluster for chatting, that =
is really not the sense, cluster gets spoiled by messages, so its just =
the use of the cluster: It should only be used to report "real =
transmissions". Just this and the cluster would be back to what it is =
intended for.
Chatting can be done by using the "talk" or at least "ann/full" =
command, even the last is a misuse.
The only thing is that DX became a little bit boring now: Earlier, you =
were really sitting in front of your radio, waiting for the burst, =
noting the counter/timer, rewinding and listening. Today you can do =
everything while doing a FSK441 QSO using WSJT, even making homeworks =
with the children, so the thrill of a QSO is less than it was before. =
Else, you do not have real control about what has been received, just =
hit the right mouse button as long as you have all necessary letters on =
your screen...
This may be a reason why so many complain about QRM: Using HSCW, you =
really had to be present in the RX periods, nowadays its worthless, =
even if you are not at the site for some periods, you can still scroll =
back if there was someone answering... This is what makes me concerned =
about this new mode. FSK441 is fun, but HSCW was exciting.
Final:
- Do not chat using DX announcements on the cluster. Use "Talk" command =
and if absolutly unavoidable, "ANN/FULL"
- Only announce real transmissions in "DX" messages
- Be onest that in the QSO all necessary data is truthfully exchanged =
in the QSO. You are cheating yourself otherwise! (Otherwise, why do you =
even do the QSO?)
- Within MS QSOs, keep the protocol, and be shure to have at least =
received the "R" of your parter indicating he has your data complete.
- During times of high activity, use the number system for CQ.
For time slot multiplexing, I would prefer that a European core (JO40 =
radius 1000km) transmits in the second period, while those outside =
transmit should transmit in the first. Stations at the transit of the =
two zones are rare and can decide freely according the the current =
situation where to transmit.

PSE NOTE: I moved! JN58jd is no longer my QTH! I am now (and hopefully =
forever) in JN58ri.
