[Meteor-Scatter] WSJT : lets think about procedure

Richard,
.... and that's why I have already written the paper for the IARU Region 1
conference in November.
(the cut-off date for papers was end of January by the way.)
Entitled....
PRINCIPLES OF BANDPLANNING -
CONFLICTS WITH EMERGING NARROWBAND DIGITAL COMMUNICATION MODES
...it describes the old convention of describing the 144MHz band (for
example) sub-sections as
EME, CW, SSB etc whereas now we have narrowband digital modes for
weak-signal working
that are appropriate within the bottom 400kHz of the 2M band.
My paper is to redefine the the left hand column of the band plans to bring
it into the digital age so to speak.
I have also written a paper regarding the allocation of (WSJT) / FSK441
within the 144MHz band.
Other Region 1 socieities have similar proposals. The problem here of course
is that allocating specific
frequencies for specific modes may cause problems as future modes develop.
In my opinion it is best to define a sub-band within each VHF/UHF band for
weak-signal narrow-band
digital communications first and then allocate specifics later (normally by
the mjority of operators).
One point regarding WSJT. Why do some ops use this abbreviation as a
definition of a mode.
For example - 'Tx 1st period 144.370MHz WSJT beaming 090 degrees'.
WSJT is the term for a whole suite of programs.
More appropriately ops should use FSK441 or JT44 to identify what they are
transmitting.
One day it will be so popular that they won't need to use the DX Cluster to
identify what they are doing!!
