Thirty eight radio operators from four Maryland Counties, Allegany, Calvert, Charles and Prince George’s County joined together showing strong team support in making it a grand success. A tornado event caused communications outages and a mass evacuation into the neighboring hospitals for medial care. Prince George’s County ARES® Emergency Coordinator was called to assist is sending radio email traffic from the County Health Dept to the State for resupply of medical supplies. Additional assistance was required to track the delivery ‘truck’ from the ‘warehouse’ to it’s final destination. Charles County Amateur Radio Club provided a driver for tracking. Tracking responsibility was successfully accomplished by Allegany County ARES® and rendevous for pick up was the task of Calvert County ARES®. From the call for help to the delivery of the resupply medications. . .it was a complete mission success.
January 14: PRGE ARES® was invited to attend the National Capital Region Evacuation Exercise held in Crystal City, VA. The table top exercise reviewed the effectiveness of individual Health Care facility evacuation procedures. Guest speakers were from New York’s Long Beach Community discussing Hurricane Sandy Lessons Learned. They spoke very highly of how Amateur Radio played a vital role for their evacuation communications. As a result, five hospital staff personnel are now licensed Amateur Radio operators.
