I actually haven't run an APRS client locally for quite some time.  The
digi/iGate is running APRX on a Raspberry Pi out at the silo.  When I
did run a client I used YAAC which is a cross-platform Java based APRS
client.  It is still in active development:

As I recall it did place the outline of a warned area on its map
display.  That info is recorded in the NWS data packet sent from the
APRS-IS internet servers.  I used the client to monitor what was
transmitted by the digi and never connected it to the APRS-IS directly.
