As near as I can tell, the airport is the reporting station for
temperature, humidity, wind speed and direction, and barometric
pressure.  The NWS does not accept automatic rain gauges for official
measurements which is why those observations are separate.  I suppose if
the airport were staffed full time and someone was appointed to make the
rainfall observation each day then it would be included.

That said, I know my rainfall data from my weather station is sent to a
program called MADIS which NWS has access to, but I don't know to what
extent they use it.
