I have heard of the 3 words deal recently and it seems some years ago.
The problem I have with it is that the words appear to have no
relationship to each other and seem to be completely random on adjacent
squares. Perhaps I have not looked into it deeply enough.
I really think the Maidenhead grid square system employed in amateur
radio is quite clever and though seeming random does have a pattern to
it. It can also be used to specify a very small area though it is rare
in amateur use to go beyond the six character Field/Square/Subsquare
notation, e.g. EM19ov.

It's too bad that it has not gained acceptance outside of amateur radio.
