[MCARC] Amateur radio licensees on a Google map

Thanks Nate, that is pretty neat. I noticed my call does not appear on the map but WØDOD+ does. If you click on WØDOD you then get the info for both KØKSI and WØDOD.

When I zoomed out and saw the grid square map I was reminded of a new app I saw on WIBW news a few weeks ago. The app is called what3words and is it a gps type app. The whole world is divided into 10ft x 10ft grid squares (roughly the 3m resolution of gps) and each square is identified by 3 words. The grill at the south shelter of Lions park would be identified by forefinger.reassured.unicorns

I think the app was developed in the UK primarily for emergency services. The WIBW report said that Los Angelas county in California is using it and at least some agency in the Topeka area is but I don’t think Topeka or Shawnee county are. I sent a message to Bill Schwindamann (Marshall County EM Director) and he had not heard of the app.

If you know the 3 words for a location you can enter them into the app and then exit to use Google Maps, etc for driving instructions.

It is my understanding that the use of 3 words is better than latitude & longitude for emergency services because of the time to transmit the information and numbers can get transposed. Makes me wonder if this “technology” will be integrated into existing things like the gps in cars, etc. Who knows, OnStar might obtain the lat&long for a vehicle but then transmit the location to emergency services using what3words.

73,
Dave
