All:
I just had a very nice phone conversation with Rick Stoll from BVT. I
shall attempt to summarize:
- He knew all about the accidental removal of the clubs antenna. He said
it was in the process of falling off already when they took it down.
- He's willing to install another antenna for us as long as we provide
it and all the PROPER mounting equipment. He's not going to do a "duck
tape and bailing wire" job.
- (I think we should still get City approval, but that's just me. Maybe
it's a "what they don't know won't hurt them" thing?)
- He said the City used to have an equipment cabinet up there but he's
not sure what's in it. BVT's cabinet is full.
- (Dennis: is the City's cabinet where the packet gear was located?)
- He said they have some old power supply cabinets "in a pile out back"
that we might could adopt one if it would be large enough.
- The DB224 antenna that was offered isn't BVT's. It was just something
still on the tower that wasn't being used so they offered it, but it's not
really theirs to offer. My thought on that is that if somebody comes along
years from now and wants their antenna back, we'll worry about that then
and in the meantime we may as well get some good out of it. He didn't
remember about feedline from that antenna.
- When I asked about the possibility of getting an Internet connection
up there for remote-control of the repeater, he said "may.....be.......".
I don't know if the controller even has that feature, I just thought I'd
ask about getting Internet.
So, we have the possibility of using an existing commercial VHF antenna
and/or putting a ham antenna up there. I say both! the .285 repeater and
a club digipeater.
If there's existing coax to the DB224, I've got a RigExpert AA-600 that'll
make quick work of telling us where that antenna is at.....
Dave, can I leave it to you to talk to the City people about us going up
there on a recon mission?
I'll be the BVT contact person.
