The Hamilton Wireless Association encourages those who are interested in
emergency communication or perhaps just interested in personal radio
communications to participate in the upcoming Amateur Radio license event.
In addition to filling out a simple form, passing a test of basic radio
technology is all that is needed.  For those who have taken CERT (or have a
firm commitment to do so in the near future), or are members of the Medical
Reserve Corps, HWA offers a license preparation class on the same day as the
examination.

The preparation class and examination will be held this Saturday, May 9.
The study session begins at 9:00am., with an examination to obtain your
license scheduled at 1:00pm.  The location of the class is Room 101, Novato
Community Hospital.

At the Saturday License Class, you will be given a booklet with questions
and correct answers which we ask you to read up to the time of the test.
Experience indicates virtually everyone who reads the materials passes the
test.

Once you obtain your Amateur Radio license, we ask you to purchase a two-way
radio. Cost of the radio ranges between $125 and $180. Our recommended radio
is in the $180 range.

The cost of the License Class is $25.

Examinations for the Amateur Technician, General and Extra class licenses
(elements 2, 3 and 4) are held at 1:00PM.  A single $15.00 fee is charged
for one or more elements and is included in the charge for the morning
license class.   A test element may be retaken at an additional charge of
$15.00.

The License Class offered by the Hamilton Wireless Association is the first
step in the HWA-sponsored radio program.  Once you have obtained your
license, we invite you to attend a four-session Communications Class.   We
would like you to help us build an expanding emergency radio network in your
neighborhood as part of a neighborhood response in the event of a disaster.

Our "Marin Teams" mailing list provides announcements of upcoming classes,
and current information about the program.  The list also provides a way to
communicate among our Radio members.  If you are not already a subscriber,
ask to be placed on the list.

The Communications Classes are conducted on an ongoing basis to assist you
with using your radio.  There are four class sessions which are held in
sequence Thursday evenings at Hamilton from 7:00pm to 9:00pm.   Further,
there are on-air exercises held every Monday evening from 7:00 to 7:30 in
which you can participate from your home.   If you know of any neighbors who
would like to join us in our radio group, please let them know about the
program!
