Even in company with the two NERV votes, from distinguished members of
Bill Smith DART Communicators, already on this message, I will submit my
vote for NEAR - Neighborhood Emergency Amateur Radio. Why?
We are "Neighborhood" (part of our current temporary name), and we are
"Emergency".
We are "Amateur" radio, as distinguished from the many other radio
groups involved in
emergencies, especially since many of the unknowing think that Ham
radio is superfluous or is
     disappearing.
We are "NEAR", right in your neighborhood, and based on our group's
growth rate of which
can be proud, we will be in more neighborhoods and therefore nearer
to more people.
NEAR is a short name, goes well with DART or CERT.
The name "NEAR" alone has a meaning, a valid one since we are close, and
involves no
translation or question as do MARS, RACES, ARES, and other names.
With its descriptive name, "NEAR" is easier to remember, by others and
us, than more involved
     abbreviations and names.

73s de W6NFF Greetings! Dan Williams
