The APC's use small gell cells for size.  It doesn't matter what size is 
connected.  I am not sure if the charging circuit for gel is the same as 
deep cycle, but it has the advantage of being designed for continuous 
use so expect it will work.  I would start with a couple of batteries.  
It must be a 12v system as the computer backups use 12v.
If the battery backup works, then all that is needed is a generator that 
can be connected to the APC when needed. When power comes back, just 
unplug the APC from the generator and plug it into the wall.
