[MAMS] Crazy list activities

Probably none of you know this, but for a couple months now there has
been a deluge of people (or somethings) trying to join the group. They
are not hams. I believe someone or something is filling out the
on-line membership application form at the MAMS site.
What's really weird is that the applications list e-mail addresses
that often have names in them, and the applicant lists a name that is
completely different. E.g. "al.eloyan at uc-berkeley.org
[Janet Thomas]".
At first there were as many as 20 of these a day but now it''s down to
a couple a day. The thing I don't get is why are they doing this? I
actually heard back from a couple rejected people saying someone was
using their e-mail address and they didn't apply for membership. What
good would it be for someone to use a fake e-mail address belonging to
someone else to try to gain membership?
I don't mind going to the MAMS admin site and rejecting all of them. I
just don't understand why or how. It puzzles me. There has to be more
to it than an intention to annoy me.
:-)
