Hello Jay, Douglas,
I am not yet as "old iron" as Jay on LF but I have seen the development of
the last years.
I think to myself that it is no different in the USA compared to other
countries, every radio amateur should keep his station up to date. This
should be extended to: Every radio amateur should be up to date, at least
technically ;o)
I can remember my first TA at 2200m in QRSS, I don't remember how many times
I pressed the "reload" button of my browser until my call was visible in the
Jay´s Grabber...
I also remember the few plain CW qsos at 630m... but those times are over.
This is the same development as with EME. This was a Mode for a few people,
with high power, huge antenna systems, the "normal" radio amateur could only
dream of. Today you can do EME with little effort, thanks to digi-modes.
This made EME accessible to a broad mass. To the advantage of all, because
the more stations qrv are the better.
The same applies to the real low bands, with the digi-modes OPERA, WSPR,
FST4W even stations with small antennas and low transmission power have a
chance to use these bands and to be heard, it is very important to get a
feedback, which is available via WSPR net or PSK reporter almost in real
time.
This motivates more and more people to get on these bands.
Just for your information, I prefer any CW QSO over a digi mode qso, but
times change and Didi is still amateur radio.
just my 2 cents
Joe
