A great many laptops won't let you go all the way to clipping. The 
assumption with internal sound cards on portables is that they will only 
be used for gaming or Skyping via headsets, so they have AGC that tries 
to prevent your average nontechnical user from overdriving the A/D 
converter and causing excess distortion.  I gather some notebooks have 
sound settings that let you disable AGC.  Mine doesn't.  It bugs me as a 
former professional recording engineer to not be able to manually ride 
gain.  But it doesn't really pose any serious problem for Argo that I've 
ever found.
