a receiver connected to the Internet for remote access, you'll need some
sort of protection.

That left me mighty paranoid about being connected to the net. Even not
connecting to unknown sites or opening file attachments wasn't adequate
protection.

Personally, I have found Avast! to be one of the best AV programs for my
use. I use the free version with a mix of WIN XP, WIN7 and WIN10 on about
10 machines and have had no problems over the past 4 years.

But the BIG guardian here for my networks is the firewall router that I use
- Sophos UTM-9 software - (free for home use) that runs on a dedicated
computer. It is totally configurable, and auto updates the AV definition
file every 15 minutes. I have three different networks and a webserver
behind the Sophos firewall. Nothing gets through, it does not even show up
as anything is you ping the IP address of the router - it looks like a total
dead end to the outside world. I can block or allow anything I want to
control. It has a fairly steep learning curve, but the end result is well
worth it. In 4 years, nothing has penetrated my system, although many have
tried. (Did I mention that the logging function is outstanding?)

YMMV, but this solution works for me.
