Thanks Larry,
I'm all set now. Several people provided links to the article. It
turns out I already had a copy which evidently was distributed by
the author through another channel. It made no mention of QEX, so I
didn't realize it was the same article. I will study it some more
now that I know it is where these design equations came from.
It is always interesting that different people have different
experiences and arrive at different places. My experience to date
with FET amplifiers has apparently been very different from yours.
I've built two Class D amplifiers which were nothing but a waste of
time and money. Neither worked and I could not figure out why. Maybe
it was pure luck but I've built two Class E amplifiers, both of
which worked without any fuss and have been just about bulletproof.
I realize 2200m is still considered an "experimental" band and I do
sometimes wonder if maybe I just don't belong there. I love
operating, observing/studying propagation. The challenge of making
QSOs is just the sort of thing I have always sought in radio. But I
don't enjoy this level of fooling with amplifiers trying to get
something on the air. That is not the sort of experimentation I had
in mind, but it seems it's the price of admission so I keep trying.
Last summer when a Hafler 9505 was offered here I couldn't imagine
spending money on a commercial amp. I have always rolled my own from
HF to UHF, most being my own designs. I now wish I had borrowed
money to buy that Hafler. I'd have been much better off I think.
