I have used several of these (free and paid, including VAC).  Free VB Cable
is definitely the best and could do things the paid software that some use
could not.

If you are doing crazy things like connecting speaker outputs to mic inputs
on PC's, you should definitely being using the above instead.   It has
allowed me to do things I could not otherwise do for free,
