Mike,
For a full wave loop (like a cubical quad for example), you would be
correct, maximum radiation off the 'faces' of the antenna i.e. at 90 degrees
to the plane of the loop. For an electrically small loop, maximum radiation
is off the ends, if your loop wire is oriented N-S, then maximum radiation
will also be N-S.
When I started out, I was under the same impression that you have, but
Bill Ashlock corrected me.
