[Lowfer] Question : Hanging Vertical drop wires on a Horizontal Top Load

Andy, it is possible to shorten a dipole by adding vertical drops at the
ends. It is also possible to gain a band by putting vertical drops along
the middle, sized correctly, for example, it is possible to add an 80
and/or 40 meter functionality to your dipole in this way. It does not
always work the best way that way though. It is better to make a butterfly
with whole new wires for those bands to the same center feed point. The
end of section drop wires would add a vertical component to your signal.
Drop wires along the route would not resonate for 160 and depending on
where they are could add some SWR. Again, while it does decrease your
signal over a full dipole to some extent, the main reason one would want a
vertical component on a horizontal dipole is frankly tactical. Having a
vertical component on a horizontal polarization makes it very hard to
triangulate on the location of the transmitting antenna. That's about it.
