The prototype DIDS 50 kW AM station on 179 KHz (call WGU20) operated for
several years from Edgewood during that time period. I have a QSL card
somewhere and visited the transmitter site at Edgewood when they were
active. I do not recall them ever using SSB and they always "advertised"
being the first 50 kW solid state transmitter. In that iteration, there
were to be two near 60 kHz control stations. Of course the system was
never developed and those frequencies were instead used by the USAF GWEN
network. (When that shutdown, many of the antennas/transmitters were
converted to DGPS around 300 KHz -- some were actually taken apart and moved
for that). I remember listening to all those and now the LW European
broadcasters in the 150-200 kHz band are slowly going silent.
