[Lowfer] Argo and Spectran under Windows 8.1

Hi John
I used to use 'Microsoft Office Document Scanning' which came with MS Office
2003 with my WinXP pc using a Canon scanner. It used to give me 99% accurate
OCR, much better than the bundled Canon software.
Then one day when I came to use it I found that it didn't work.
After a lot of Googling and general messing about, discovered that this
program was either not included, or substantially different in Microsoft's
2007 Office offering and a MS upgrade! had brought my 2003 Office in line
with 2007...
Then I upgraded to Win7 Pro64 and found that my Canon scanner was not now
supported! So a new scanner and eventually got 'Microsoft Office Document
Scanning' operational again.
Progress!
Cheers!
Clive

Interesting information, Cliff, but I think it demonstrates precisely why
the example was sound.
It's a direct answer to what JB was asking: why WOULDN'T an application
written for one version of Windows necessarily be expected to work on a
later one? Because Microsoft sometimes changes the rules.
This particular change may have been documented well enough for active
developers. But we mere mortals being forced to "upgrade" to a later OS, as
Mark is having to do, are less likely to hear about such things until after
we suddenly encounter a problem with our preferred software. So, it pays to
ask about others' experiences.
(In my anecdote about WSPR, note that I had _not_ upgraded from a pre-Vista
version of Windows. The computer came with Windows 7, and my first
installation of WSPR worked just fine on it. Whether it _should_ have
worked at first or not is an interesting side question. Did somebody at
Microsoft slip up and omit the file restriction in the first release of 7,
then correct it? At any rate, IMO, it's worth remembering that periodic
updates alone can sometimes break an application, even without going to a
whole new version of the OS.)
