Andy: You may have better results coupling an e-probe antenna to the tree
several feet or higher up and ground the coax shield to the tree roots at
base with a CM choke following to shack. Then toy with the coax separation
distance from trunk (on trunk, 1 inch away, 2 inch away, etc. Also toy with
the probe size and separation. The tree should load down the e-probe's
active device from it's very high Z input, so toying with the bias resistor
would make sense. I think Ralph's active tree antenna had a 2 megaohm
resistor if I recall correctly.....
Anyway I always have reasonably results (local NDBs come up in strength
considerably) close-coupling the whip from my Sony 2001 at LF to a tree and
using it's built-in antenna trimmer to tune the fet front end, but I have
not tried the tree root ground thing with it yet......not the best weather
for such antics.....but I should try that some day....
If you have any LF portable radio with a whip (that works at LF, many don't)
it may be worth a try. The manual antenna trim feature on the old Sony 2001
is especially useful for such experiments.....(and that antenna trim circuit
is pretty neat if you look at the schematic for the Sony 2001 )... I think
the bias resistor on the front-end fet in the Sony 2001 is 1 megaohm ---
makes sense given how the radio would be in use near other objects .....
