With a single wire, your tree-tenna could actually be acting as a 
_combination_ of different antennas, the net characteristics of which 
will vary with such factors as the height of the wire and the 
termination.  It'd most likely be possible to duplicate either a 
certain level of noise pickup, or a certain level of signal pickup, 
with the comparisons you're thinking of trying. But those won't be 
conclusive as to the mode of operation, because there are still 
uncontrolled variables.

To isolate the reception properties of the tree itself, I believe 
you're going to have to use a real transmission line of some sort or 
another...perhaps even some relatively cheap RG-59 from Home Depot.
