JD;
Say at mid-day-noon-is there any trace of anybody out your way? I realize many early evenings you see nothing even with low noise. Appears this capture is skywave and then just fades out?

Yesterday evening's capture, at last! It spans 80 minutes, centered on
local sunset.
Signal was not audible, nor up to AGC threshold. Noise in 250 Hz BW before
sunset was typically S2, fluctuating from nil to S6. After sunset, noise
increased to typically S3, with fewer nil intervals and peaks to S9.
Vaisala showed no lightning in the contiguous 48 states, and only a little
in Canada, Mexico, and the Caribbean. Lightning coverage was similar when I
left for the field and when I returned, so the difference most likely
included static via skywave.
The after-dark noise was just enough to keep me from discerning SIW at
185.185, apparently. Seemed improbable that the transatlantic activity
would make it through, but I was about to try until the showers began. Now,
Bambi had been mocking me a few yards from the SUV before dark. Later,
while I was readying to leave, his big brother signalled he was in a bad
mood out in the corn field, so I rolled up the coax as expeditiously and
noisily as possible in the rain. (They seem to know we can't shoot them
right now, let alone harass them, so they're making the most of it.)
