John: I have used other software modes, and had no problem.. At least
a problem that I was made aware of.. This is the first time I have tried
QRSS and that may be the issue.. Since keying is by VOX, the audio
driven modes seem to work OK, and might not show any slight variations
in audio level.. Using a 1630 Cycle tone to key the radio , if the level
changes any, and I have noticed that, then what should be a soild line
turns out to be a fat, fuzzy, line in the waterfall. Especially is the audio
is overdriven, or mismatched.. Now to answer your question.. I am
running the speaker out into a rat shack 600 ohm Isolation transformer.
I am sure that the speaker out is not 600 ohms.. The output side of the
transformer goes into the mike input of the radio which is 600 ohms,
low level.. I have to pull the windows volume control sliders way down,
and barely crack the mike pot on the radio.. At a bare minimum, I think
I need an inline volume control cable, and a variable resistor across
the input to the Isolation Transformer to possibly better match the sound
card output... An investment in a rigblaster would probably be a good
idea; just don't happen to have the loose funds to do that... hi - hi

Neil got me out in Utah, and the same " fuzzies " were in his capture too..

not enough, and the radio chatters, or too much, and the
 radio splatters.

Given that description, there could be something to the
possibility you are considering, Andy.  What sort of
coupling are you currently using between the computer and
the radio to achieve mic-level input to the rig?
