Hi all: My car almost laid down on me last night, engine missing,
and almost die-ing.. 4 years since a plug and wire change, so I
did that in 28 degree weather this morning.. Hey.. I'm in TN. so
28 degrees is cold... Sticker shock from the parts..unbelievable,
over 80 dollars for plugs and wires for a 97 Intrepid.. Engine
still cutting out at idle... been here before, ended up being a
blown center intake gasket..Oh Well... it runs, will get it to
the shop for that repair..
On to radio now: unplugged every cable conected to the TV..
No change.. No amount of filtering helped any.. Many posts had
mentioned the noise coming in on my coax.. OK, so I had a round
ferrite core from an old CRT monitor. I tightly, and as close as
I could, wound 11 turns thru the core. That was all the slack I
had.. Lots of changes.. some good, some not so good.. The TV noise
on 160 meters dropped slightly over 2 S-units.. I was able to
hear on 160 with the TV on.. I was decoding WSPR stations after
dark all over the place.. All well and good so far... I wondered
about possible coax heating with the core so I ran my usual
10 watts into the antenna, and WHOAH NELLIE !!! The SWR was out
the roof.. The ferrite core added LOTS of Inductance.. I don't
know where the resonance went to, but I will say it's somewhere
below 1.7 MHz.. waaaay below.. I'm assuming that to remedy this,
all I will need to do is shorten the sides of the Windom and
bring it back into 160 meters.. Another Not Good, was; now I
have TV noise in the HF spectrum that I didn't have before..
That's beyond my knowledge as to why that happened.. On to the
next topic now.. Reception on 600 meters " definitely "
improved.. As of this post, I haven't tried 1750, or 2200 yet
I have been to busy " hearin " stations on 600 meters.. I heard
WX2GCT extremely loud, as well as Eric - XJM.. Jay XGR on WSPR,
XRM on 480 KHz was CW copy audible here.. XSH/31 and XSH/7 were
killer signals.. I heard XSH/10 in CW, first time hearing him.
And I'm probably forgetting someone because I didn't write them
down... I was still " discovering " noise that I did not know
was in there.. The noise floor on 600 meters dropped so much
that I started hearing faint noise from the " lion in the livingroom "
AND.. I was now hearing noise from my radio PC that I couldn't
hear before.. The homebrew Brute Force filter that would not help
with TV noise; Killed the PC noise.. I started detecting monitor
hash then.. All I had on hand were a few snap on cores.. I wound
the monitor cable thru 3 of them, as many turns, and as tight as
I could, then wrapped them in aluminum foil.. The monitor hash
went away.. Gentlemen, I am a bit ashamed to admit that I was not
aware I had this much noise still in the house.. After all the
filtering, and shielding I had done in the past.. But reducing one
noise source, allowed me to find, and eliminate others.. One big
priority now is to get the antenna back to where I can TX on
160 meters.. 73 guys, and again; thanks for all the pointers..
