[Lowfer] WSPR overload

Doug

I am probably older than you but I started in the early 80s building S-100
bus boxes. DOS was the Operating System and it was fast. Later Microsoft
came in and with cheap memory threw out all the rules for compact efficient
code and the monster continues to grow as fast as the memories can get
denser. We had some nice expensive machines based on those old boxes.

I'm too cheap to fork over 150 bucks for the software. I used to have an IT
guy that got me much dubious software for home use. We ended up firing him
after we found out he stole a $35,000 tractor and suspected him of an inside
job where someone stole 5 work stations one night. I t cost me a bunch of
money to undue some of the pirate stuff we found out he had done at the
business, so I swore off illegal software even for home use.

I tried LINUX a couple of years ago, but I was too lazy to take time to
learn all the jargon. I probably ought to try again.

"Best to build your own."

Yes, it is. I've been doing it since the late 1980s.

Here, I'll start you off with my favorite case:

Just buy the components and put them together. It really isn't hard at all.

I like ASUS motherboards. Should be able to find plenty that have PCI slots.

Couple more points: Get a good, modular power supply. Buy as much RAM as
you can afford.

Windows 8 sucks. Windows 7 for the win.
