Yes, it is. I've been doing it since the late 1980s.

Here, I'll start you off with my favorite case:

Just buy the components and put them together. It really isn't hard at all.

I like ASUS motherboards. Should be able to find plenty that have PCI slots.

Couple more points: Get a good, modular power supply. Buy as much RAM as
you can afford.

Windows 8 sucks. Windows 7 for the win.
