When I learned to fly at the Hawthorne Airport about 1955 all of our 
airknockers had 1 w 3105 transmitters and I think the tower replied on 
the same frequency.  Ignition noise was so bad that SOP was to speed up, 
cut the throttle, try to hold altitude and try to hear the tower.  Often 
they had to use the light!  Those were the days when there were still 
A/N beacons and they were easy to read on the LF receiver at home.
