JD & other VLF enthusiasts

Been meaning to answer your post of 1/10 regarding VLF reception ...

The stations you noted 19.8, 21.4, 24.8 kHz are correct and present most days and/or nights. 22.2 is
JJI although GQD at 22.1 is a close in neighbor. As far as 25.6, 26.6, 28.4 these are stations that
I haven't received. They either exist and I haven't received them yet ... or they might be sidebands
of the 'big three' - NAA, NLF and NML ... or spurs generated in the antenna preamplifier or receiver
... or they might not be active. As Garry noted there is a list of VLF stations at
http://www.w1vd.com/vlf.html . These are actual receptions over the past year and a half - not just
a list compiled from various sources.

Received the cw ID from JJY 40 kHz this morning - the first time this season
http://www.w1vd.com/capture/JJY011512.mp3 ... albeit weekly. The best reception last year was at the
end of January - early February. The path to JJY is a difficult one from here and there's a narrow
window of opportunity between between 1130 and 1200Z. The cw ID occurs at the 15th and 45th minute
of each hour (about 3/4 of the way through the minute) so luckily the 45th ID coincides with the
propagation peak! For unknown reasons the opening to JJY 40 kHz is weaker and much shorter than the
opening to JJI 22.2 kHz.

If you're using Spectrum Lab, I'd suggest activating the sample rate calibrator under
components>show components if you haven't already done so. This feature provides a highly accurate
readout of frequency which can be important when identifying unknown stations. I use NML 25.2 kHz as
the calibration source as they seem to be the most consistently active station.

Pix below of JJI 'in the clear' with GQD 22.1 kHz off the air this morning.
