Garry,

You make an excellent point. These digital modes tend to be evaluated by their proponents based on steady-state noise. The real (LF) world has static crashes, electrical impulse noise and fading. Tests with Jay at 600m between Opera and WSPR suggest that Opera's static crash tolerance is more limited. 

But, Opera has the significant advantage of simple transmitting requirements - on/off keying, no SSB exciter, and non-linear PA.
