Andy I had a similar setup that I used years ago (260 ft long dipole fed
with ladder line that I used for HF....shorted it together at the base for
LF listening). I constructed an "antenna tuner" to use it on LF based on a
design by R.W. Burhans in the May, 1983 issue of Radio Electronics.
Basically a metal box with a rotary switch that selected a bunch of
different values of inductors and an air variable capacitor for tuning.
Still have it. It worked fine, and the lower I went in frequency, the
narrower the bandwidth of the antenna. I still have a (poorly reproduced)
copy of the article if you want to read it.
