[Lowfer] How do I set RF Gain for maximum sensitivity

Hi all:  Will someone take some time and address the issue of How to properly set the RF Gain control to obtain
maximum receiver sensitivity ??? I know that is not a " one answer fits all " question too. I have a TS450S, and
I have always thought that " run it wide open " was the way to go, but I have " LEARNED " ; That ! is not the case.
Of course I am specifically interested in low band / LF reception where the noise is always there.. What are some
suggestions on radio settings for maximum " Weak Signal " reception under noisy conditions ?? If a weak signal is
" IN " the band noise; can using the RF Gain, attenuators, AIP , help in any way to possibly receive the weak signal ??
