Thanks John - I untwisted the antenna from around a few low branches yesterday afternoon, and retuned - maybe it helped.
Looked at the lightning web site (  http://thunderstorm.vaisala.com/explorer.html  )- and North America was as clean as a a whistle.
It should have been a great night - thanks.
