Hi Andy don't worry about it I guess we have all been there and have the
T-shirt hidden away somewhere :-))

If you "must" use PL259s I recommend the ones made by Greenpar which is now
MaCom, I think These have proper ferrule connection for the braid and rubber
grommet to grip the jacket. They are waterproof at the cable entry. They are
a bit more expensive that the nickel-plated trash and even better than the
old Amphenol silver plated brass. We had loads of returns in the 2-way radio
business with the cheaper connectors , but when we started fitting the
better ones (about $5 ea in your money) we never had an installation return
for a connector problem. I think it is vital that the jacket be gripped in
the plug.....I had no success with crimp BNCs until I started using adhesive
shrink-sleeving over the crimp and jacket. It is the twisting that the braid
will not accept, it leds to broken stands and eventually a complete open.
